From Rwanda to Kuzbass: African Students Master the Russian Language

1 July 2025

An important event took place at Kuzbass State Technical University – two students from Rwanda successfully completed their Russian language course. They took the final exam and received certificates that will open the doors to Russian universities.

20-year-old Cyriaque Muhire and 25-year-old Varelin Komezumenge became the first students from Africa to attend Kuzbass Polytechnic University.

The students arrived in early February 2025. Cyriaque plans to study medicine in Yekaterinburg, while Varelin intends to pursue a career in international business. Both students were committed to their studies and actively participated in university life, including the "Young Russia" conference.

According to the teachers who daily interacted with the African students, despite the language barrier, the students adapted quickly and even made friends. Communicating with their peers, Varelin and Cyriaque, who speak English and French, found the translator on their smartphones very helpful.
