The Department of Mine Surveying traces its roots to the Tomsk Technological Institute, which began teaching in 1900 with two departments—Mechanical and Chemical as well. This year became a landmark for the development of mine surveying education in Siberia, marking the beginning of the formation of one of the leading mine surveying schools in Russia.

The Department of Mine Surveying and Geology at KuzSTU remains one of the leading centers of mine surveying education in Russia. It continues to cultivate worthy representatives of the mine surveying profession, preserving and developing its rich traditions. Today, it has 28 employees, including three professors with Doctors of Engineering Sciences and five associate professors with Candidates of Engineering and Geological-Mineralogical Sciences.

The department continues to train mine surveyors through full-time and part-time programs, and since 2015, it has also trained geological engineers. Its research activities encompass fundamental and applied research in geomechanics, deposit geometrization, mine surveying support for mining operations, and geological and geomechanical deposit modeling.
