On 31 January, a regular meeting of the Bureau of the Department of Earth Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences was held, where the Scientific Council on Problems of Mining Sciences approved a new composition No. 13000/2-3. The Bureau now consists of 14 eminent scientists, 26 people have become members of the Scientific Council, including Alexei Yakovlev, the candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, rector of the Kuzbass State Technical University.
On the same day, Academician Valery Zakharov, a specialist in the field of mining, was approved as the Chairman of the Scientific Council on Problems of Mining Sciences by unanimous decision of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Our Council is engaged in coordination and development of scientific areas pertaining to development of subsoil and deposits of solid minerals, - said Nikolai Bortnikov, Chairman of the Bureau of the Department of Earth Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, at the meeting of the Presidium.
The Scientific Council is a public scientific advisory body that promotes the organization and implementation of research work in the field of theory and methodology for the integrated effective development of the Earth subsoil and the practical use of scientific results.

Members of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on problems of mining sciences are involved in the organization of a competition and the work of an expert commission on awarding the N.V. Melnikov Prize for outstanding scientific work in the field of problems of integrated development of subsoil.
All decisions made by the Scientific Council of the Department of Earth Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as a rule, are advisory in nature.
